Carcross at a Glance
Originally called Caribou Crossing, Carcross is a historic village situated
on the South Klondike Highway between Whitehorse
and Skagway, Alaska.
Home to the world's smallest desert,
Carcross was a major stopover and supply centre during the Klondike Gold Rush,
during which also saw the creation of the White
Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, which is still used today. Visitors to Carcross
can explore its heritage buildings on a walking tour by picking up a brochure
at the Carcross
Visitor Information Centre. Attractions include the Matthew
Watson General Store, the oldest operating store in the territory. Carcross
and its surrounding wilderness provides plenty of outdoor adventures including
dog sledding, hiking and all-terrain vehicle trips, which are an active way
to explore the Southern Lakes region. Lake
Bennett also offers challenging canoeing or relaxing at the beach.
